The Taj Mahal is a fitting name for a restaurant that is a jewel and gathering place in Ft. Collins. The food is great and the service is wonderful. Whether you are dining in or taking out the experience is great. They also have an incredible lunch buffet. There are many traditional offerings in vegetarian or meat options. Any dish can be made vegetarian which is a plus. The curries are flavorful and deep in aroma and spices. The byrannis are great and they also have kebabs, rices, naan bread, and other authentic Indian cuisine. They also have a full bar for those interested in libations. My go to dish is the Saag Paneer wish Garlic Naan bread. I have never had better Saag Paneer than here. My wife lived in the UK and we've traveled all over the world and we always compare the Saag to here. I also love the Chicken Korma and on a hot day a mango lassi is sure to cool you off. The restaurant is well appointed and in an ideal location in the heart of Old Town. Service is fast and the food is fresh and amazing.

It should be noted that I only did delivery! Pros: Lots of great vegetarian options. Rice is delicious Paneer is really well-made Very filling Nice delivery guy Cons: Portions are small for the price Delivery took 1 hour Food is a bit oversalted Food could use a bit more flavor I'm interested to go inside and experience non-delivery.

This review is only based off of their lunch buffet special from the last two times I've been here. What a disappointment! I LOVE Indian food but each time I've been lately, always taking a new person with me to introduce them to the wonders of Indian cuisine, we've left wholly unsatisfied. The last time I went the biggest issue was that although over a full hour into the buffet lunch time hours, the food was warmish, at best. Some things were partially cold, indicating that rather than anything being made fresh, it was simply reheated from the freezer or what have you. Besides that, the food was not even that great. The Chix Kormas was bland, the rice too dry and no flavor at all, and the traditional Naan bread was over baked, being almost crispy. The best dish? The spinach Saag, but even that was rather too oily, ruined by the fact that is was barely warm. On top of all this, the server was aloof, even cold, and no one else in the back bothered to smile or make you feel welcome or appreciated for giving them your business. The restaurant did not seem that clean -- even the utensils had stains on them where we all felt we had to polish of our knives and forks before using them. TVs presenting modern Indian pseudo hip-hop michael jackson crotch grabbing dance move videos didn't exactly make us feel like we were part of the usually wonderful Indian restaurant experience either. I missed having the traditional Indian sitar driven music and if you're going to have music at all, don't amp it up so much that I feel like I'm in a sports bar! VERY disappointed. Not worth the money we paid. In fact, after three not so great experiences here I doubt I will ever go here again, let alone take anyone else as each time, the novice has sworn off of trying Indian again, and these people love ethic foods of all sorts. In fact, this last time ALL three of us were sick! Too bad as I used to love the Taj Mahal. Their quality has definitely declined over the years from when they first opened and seemed to take pride in their offering. Now it feels like a "can't be bothered/taking people for granted" marginal effort.

If I could give it zero stars I would. The server was rude and reluctant to answer questions. My lamb that I ordered was undercooked to the point of it being completely raw. The food was bland and boring. Their "hot" was comparable to most restaurants mild. If you want good Indian food pass this place up and try my personal favorite the star of India over on Harvard.

Not fancy but quality Indian food. Buffet did not have too many choices but everything we had was tasty. They ran out of naan while we were there. Cost was about $10 for all you can eat. Restroom outside restaurant space...have to take a key down the hall to get into it. Crazy indian music videos on tv adds to the cultural experience.

Meh. Stopped in for the buffet at lunch. Nothing spectacular but it didn't make me sick. I probably won't go back unless the other indian places in Fort Collins are worse. Over all the food was rather bland and the selection in the buffet was lacking, it's not the worst I've had but it's very far from the best.

The place is cold! The prices are average for a night out in Fort Collins and I visited here during a weekend trip to the campus. The restaurant is clean and has a more dressy atmosphere, but could easily be a casual lunch place as well.

The fact that this is the only Indian restaurant in the Fort is quite unfortunate because this place is horrible. The flavor palate is bland and nothing resembling of the true flavors of Indian cuisine. What's more, we found a hair in our food; their response, "thank you." ?!?!?!?!?!!?!

Service: very good and very friendly. Made excellent recommendations. Food: good. We had the chicken ticca masala, lamb korma, and garlic naan (2 people) and it was very tasty. Only Indian place I have been to in ft. Collins so far, but it was my second time there and I would go back. Atmosphere: decent (but it's the same at every Indian place I go to) lights are a little too bright for our liking, but there many people there and the noise level was good (not too lively, but not dead either). I would definitely go back for a third time!

Amazing. I can't believe the mouth sex I just had there. I wish I could tell you what I had but I don't remember.

  • Andrea B.

Yuck. Ordered delivery last night and it was horrible. All of the tiny to go containers were leaking all over, the naan was so floppy and greasy it was near inedible, the dishes tasted like catsup and the sauce was the consistency of water. I will never eat here again.

  • Kyle T.

We got the chicken korma and lamb vindaloo and cheese naan. The korma and vindaloo were great but the cheese naan wasn't too cheesy, more like garlic naan. I'd recommend this place though. Bollywood clips of movies playing on the TVs too.

Taj Mahal has fantastic Indian food and is my favorite in Fort Collins. I have been coming here for years because of my love affair with their sag paneer. I recently got carry out and did plain sag with 2 orders of naan and rice. The smell coming out of that little paper bag was almost too much for me to focus on driving safely home. When I got home I eagerly ate half the saag and rice. Creamy, spicy with the perfect blend of spices, I was really happy. The naan I handed off to the hubs which I couldn't believe he waited until the next day to eat but he ate it all. The next day I polished off my leftovers and they were almost as good. Saag is definitely better eaten the same day but it helped continue the happy juices flowing 24 hours later.

Unfortunately, this is the worst Indian food I've ever had. The food is bland and greasy. The vegetable dishes are 70% oily sauce, 30% vegetables. On top of that, the servings are small but expensive. I hope other Indian food restaurants will start delivering to compete with this one.

  • Kerry T.

I can only speak to today's lunch buffet, and the comparison is to Star of India's buffet ... and I'm honestly conflicted. While Taj's saag really has paneer in it, and their lentils were top notch, the food seemed old, on a steam table that sure could use a lot more steam. Dishes were tepid at best. Service was more personal than at Star but my gripe with both lovely restaurants is that the flavor/spice level is too toned down (perhaps to appease the wonder-white-bread residents of the Choice City?)

I have lived in Fort Collins for six years now and have lived in Manhattan, Los Angeles and San Francisco where I have eaten more than my share of very good Indian food. This place is good. Solid. Not haute cuisine or inventive but as good as it gets here. There are other places in Fort Collins but my experience with them have been less than favorable. If you are looking for good solid Northern Indian food then this is the place. Don't order delivery or take-out though. They Saran Wrap these ridiculously small Chinese take-out cartons with food and charge you full price for the teensiest portions. Go in and get the full serving size.

Okay, I'm over the initial disappointment. I had an ideal meal in mind and expectations were running sky high the last time I visited them. Everything in my previous review stands (as of now), but they really are more deserving of three stars.

$46 for the smallest portions of food I've ever seen in a delivery. And the shrimp curry, while tasty, was mostly sauce. I counted eight shrimp. I will never order takeout from here again. Insane rip-off.

I just need to update my review from a few years ago. My husband and I got takeout and the food was great. But the amount of food we got for the price? RIP OFF! Never again.

  • Eddie G.

yes, it's Indian Food, but it's not really worth going back to. the app plate was nothing but deep fried nothingness and the meat dishes seem to consistently full of less desired cuts of the chicken and lamb. Sauces had much to be desired, and rice was a bit undercooked. Price wasn't bad though for it's good location.

Lunch buffet here is good, fresh and hot. Nothing very special, but good for a curry fix

We ordered take out last night and was very disappointed, very expensive for small portion of food. Better for lunch buffet than dinner.

Call of the Vindaloo I really have to stop giving in to my desires. Or at least my wishful thinking. Once again I was joneing for Indian food. Once again, I stopped into Taj Mahal. Once again, I was treated like the invisible woman. I work downtown, and unfortunately for my wallet, have a weakness for eating out. With so many choices, I happily scarf down at any number of places, but I'll catch sight of the Taj's sign, realize that a buffet is perfect if I have a shorter lunch hour that day and I think, Maybe this time, the buffet will be a little better. Maybe this time they'll be a curry that has a little bite. Maybe this time I won't be ignored. Maybe I'll quit using this style of writing (Note to self: Limit the triple whining hook). I walked in a few weeks ago, (single gal) into Taj Mahal. It's pretty obvious I'm alone, but I get the "who else IS joining you" line. (Not "IS anyone else...bit of a difference"). I say no, and am, almost grudgingly shown to my seat. Eventually, I get to order a drink, and state I'd like the buffet. The waiter scribbles in his book and shuffles away. Now, I've been here before, and I know the buffet line, but the waiter doesn't even give me the courtesy of "Buffet is in the back, help yourself" line. Just wanders away. The Tandoori Chicken was good...as per usual. Not great, but at least it was not dried out. The Alu Gobi was uninspired, and the Saag Paneer was a hunt in futility for my cheesy bits. I believe there may have been a Masala on the steam table, but it certainly wasn't memorable. Waiting back at my table was my beverage. About 10 minutes later, a basket of naan was tossed on my table. The naan is OK. The quick basket toss and run is not. I am ignored for the rest of my meal. After I am finished, I go to the back bar/register to pay my bill. (I have learned a while ago that I have to do this when eating by myself. When I've gone with male co-workers, the bill has been brought out). I am not asked if my meal was OK. I slink away, vowing to write a review, only to decide to wait a few weeks to cool down. I chatted with a friend about my experience, and they state that they never go there after some of the same service. There are several better Indian buffets out there. Star of India doesn't seem as nice since it has moved, and Mt. Everest is my favorite, but neither spot is close enough for lunch. Hopefully by the time I have my Vindaloo urge, we'll have a better spot in Old Town.

Tasty! We got the chicken tikka masala which was good. The chai tea was yummy, but a little bit sugary. We are definitely going back.

This is my favorite restaurant in Fort Collins. The food is among the best Indian food I've had in the U.S., overseas, and yes even India. I've been going there since they first opened in the mid 90s, and at times the quality of the food has fluctuated, but it has been very good for many years now. It is a good value, given that it is costly and very time-consuming to prepare a comparable meal at home. The PROS: Large portions. Good vegetable Samosas, Saag (spinach), Tikka Masala, Korma, and Bengan Bartha. A nice owner. The CONS: the service is inconsistent and lacks professionalism - when will the waiters learn to clear the appetizer dishes before bringing out the main course? The level of spiciness is inconsistent, but it is usually safe to ask for medium. The lunch buffet is a good value, but less interesting than ordering freshly prepared a la carte dishes.

Daal Baati Churma, Aloo Matar, Paneer Tikka Masala - all of these are common Indian dishes that may seem intimidating to the uninitiated ethnic diner. Most people aren't comfortable with jumping into a new cuisine without being able to pronounce the meal they are about to eat. But, I can assure you, exploring Indian cuisine is a flavorful adventure. Indian food has a 5,000 year-long history and has influenced cuisines across the world, especially in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. Using spices like ginger, coriander, cardamom, tamarind, and various herbs, fruits, and vegetables - Indian flavors are bold and sometimes pack quite a bit of heat. It's also a wonderful cuisine to embrace if you are vegetarian, since it's a wide-spread practice in the region. Taj Mahal restaurant has been serving authentic Indian dishes to Fort Collins since 1996. 16 years is a long time for a restaurant in any community, and Fort Collins has certainly enjoyed what Taj Mahal has to offer. When you walk in the restaurant on Oak Street, right there by the front door is a wall of awards and accolades for their cuisine. I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty the buffet line was, even though the spices were mild and tame for Indian standards. Everything had a muted slow-roasted consistency that you'd find in stews without any dish particularly popping with intense flavor. The difference between lunch and dinner is definitely like night and day. The feast is plentiful and the flavors are adjusted to your preferred spice level. Taj Mahal has been spicing things up for 16 years in Fort Collins, but I'm beginning to think they could step it up a bit more. This was average Indian food, safe for those testing the waters of Indian flavors for the first time, but it's nothing I'd say that really represents what the cuisine is capable of. Lunch and dinner are two completely different experiences, and while the spice is more at dinner, I actually prefer the lunch buffet. Many people in Fort Collins are fans of Taj Mahal, but there are better Indian options as far as I'm concerned.

The food was mostly good, it always depends on what is order. I do think they do a better job on the vegi platters versus meat. The Masala Chai was very good, but limited in the number of refills. The rice pudding was a little soupy, but still good. The chicken pakora was not editable, the chicken was over cooked and very dry. The vegetable pakora, on the other hand, was very delicious. I believe they have a lunch buffet, which would be interesting to try.

Fort Collins has some good restaurants and this place is borderline not one of them. It was a good place though I have had better, but it wasn't around here and I haven't seen one in the Springs. This is a good place in a nice location with the exception of the parking being scarce. The wait staff were friendly and attentive though the service was kind of slow considering there wasn't many people there. The menu has a decent selection but unfortunately they do not have dosas and I realize they are southern Indian but they are so good. The cheese naan wasn't cheesy enough but still good. The strawberry lassi was good but didn't really taste like strawberries. The coconut chicken didn't really taste like coconut either but was still really good. The tandoori botri lamb was delicious! I asked for it to be really spicy but alas, it wasn't spicy enough. Free rice pudding though! Overall I am satisfied with this place and would return. Its not like there is a better Indian place around here.

Taj... I miss this place. We would always go here with another couple to have dinner about once a month. They would remember us and the service and food was always fantastic. I would always try a new dish on the menu and was never disappointed. Oftentimes the owner would come over and give us suggestions on new dishes to try and give details of how it was prepared and what was in it. In Fort Collins, this is our choice if you are looking for an authentic taste of India.

I just moved to Fort Collins so this is my first Indian food experience in the area.... Ordered chana masala, mint naan, dal soup and baingan bharta. Chana masala had nice flavors, pleasantly spiced. Baingan bharta was a bit creamy for my taste but still good. Mint naan just tastes like regular naan. Dal soup was rather bland but not bad. So it's all right... but I will give the other Indian food restaurants in the area a try before I go back.

I don't know what these other reviewers are smoking. The Taj is very good. My favorite menu items are the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Saag Paneer. The owners are very nice and the waitstaff is attentive and kind.

I've only done the lunch buffet at this place and enjoy the variety and quality of food in the spread. For around $10, it's a great deal and not a bad way to get too stuffed: samosas, saag, vegetable korma, chicken curry, tandoori chicken and more! Kheer rice pudding for dessert included is great, not so thick consistency, but more smooth. Considering this is Fort Collins, I do feel the stronger flavors and more spiciness of authentic Indian food may be watered down for our palates, but preparation is decent all-around. Naan is fresh, not bad, but sometimes a bit gummy. Service is very friendly and accomodating.

We ordered Taj last night for delivery, and I am sad to say, never again. For $60, which included the tip for the delivery driver, we got Lamb Vindaloo, Chicken Tikka Masala, a side of Saag Paneer, garlic Naan and meat Samosas. The only thing worth eating were the samosas, but they were incredibly greasy. I also noticed something that reallllly bugged me and I think that this is the clincher. The side order of the Saag is $7.95. The REGULAR size orders of both the chicken and the lamb which run about 13-15 bucks, came in the SAME size container as the side order. It seems the food comes in smaller and smaller packages every time we order delivery. The food was just OK. There was something a bit off with the Saag, though, as both my husband and I thought it wasn't very good at all. I'm sad, as I have had really good food from here in the past, but I don't want to spend 60 bucks on a meal and be disappointed.

I'm very glad to see so many other mouth-wateringly descriptive reviews of how outstanding the food at Taj is, so I wanted to tack on that it really is a great place to eat in terms of service and atmosphere, as well. The service at Taj Mahal is Fort Collins has at times been so well-timed and refined that my hubby and I still hold other restaurants here in Chicago to that standard. The most perfectly timed water refills, EVER! My favorite story of my dining experience here was my first - homecoming my sophomore year at FCHS. I was there on a triple date and had never had anything remotely like Indian food before, and I still feel all twitterpated when I think about the taste of a Taj Mahal mango lassi! At the end of the meal, the owner brought up some dessert dishes, but none of us had ordered any. We were all such n00b high schoolers that we couldn't figure out that the restaurant was throwing us a dessert course for being adorable in-over-their-heads high schoolers...my best friend kept trying to explain that we didn't order it! I'm now -ahemahem- a few years older and I'm planning on commissioning a 'grooms cake' of those exact same galub jamun for my wedding this coming fall. Most fun game to play at Taj: Dare your 1st-timer date or guests to get the 1st scoop of basmati rice without spilling it all over the linens. *IMPOSSIBLE

My mom and I shared the appetizer sampler, lamb saag, garlic naan, and a vegetarian eggplant dish. We both loved all of it. I would give this resturant 5 stars but they need to do something about the decor. Its seriously lacking.

  • Nick S.

Indian is my favorite food, and this place does it right. my favorite dish is the chicken tikka masala. I like it here because the base is not too tomatoey. The service is super friendly. We go here a few times a month, have been to many other Indian restaurants all over the US and thus far, this place plates our favorite tikka masala. If you like things hot go with very very hot. my only qualms with this place is the "hot" factor is very inconsistent and if you like heat, but not to be murdered with it, it is challenging to order the right hot level. At times hot is good enough, at times very very hot is relatively mild. They also have great cheese naan and chai tea. Keeping it honest, the quality of food has been slipping as of late, but i have faith that it will turn itself around here soon
